Access Ability is invited to join Minister’s Disability Confident Task Group

Emma O’Connor, Director of Access Ability, has been invited to join a Task Group set up by Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson MP, focused on Small to Medium sized employers (SMEs).

The Task Group will explore how the Disability Confident scheme can be expanded to encourage SMEs, who may not have considered the opportunities that employing a person with a disability can provide, to take steps in recruiting and retaining disabled talent. (image of Emma)

Research shows that people with a disability:

  • Stay in their jobs longer
  • Take less sick leave
  • Have fewer work accidents
  • Are as productive as their colleagues

The Task Group will explore the best way to develop a Disability Confident scheme that strikes the right balance between being robust enough for the demands of SMEs, but that also commands the confidence of disabled people.

In response to the invitation, Emma says; “It is an honour that the work of the Access Ability CIC, as inclusive service user led company, has been recognised and that the Minister wants to bring our expertise in the development of a new scheme for SMEs.

“The task group is working hard to achieve a final version of the scheme to go live in March, which will recognise employers that demonstrate a real commitment to disability confidence and have a record of success.”
